The Carriageworks’ Night Market is back, and it’s haaawt. The always well-dressed Ben Milgate and Elvis Abrahanowicz of Porteño are bringing out all the stops on Friday 27 July, hosting a market that features not one or two, but 55 of Sydney’s biggest and tastiest restaurants, bars and producers. And this time, they’ll all be cooking with fire.
The Burning Love market is all about heat and flame, smoke and spice, and glorious slow-cooking. It’s Ben and Elvis’s favourite way to cook (if you’ve been to Porteño then you know what we’re talking about), and they’re bringing their mates along for the ride, too.
The line-up reads like a who’s who of Sydney’s food-scene rockstars—Morgan McGlone (Belles Hot Chicken), Andy Evans (Spice Temple), and Darren Robertson (Three Blue Ducks), just for starters. We’re hella looking forward to coal-cooked shellfish by Rising Sun Workshop, hot damper with rosemary butter by Pepe Saya, and aromatic sai ua sausages from the folks at Chat Thai. And don’t think the Porteño guys will be slacking off. They’ll be stoking the fire for their eight-hour wood-fired lamb, serving it with braised peas and chimichurri.
You can douse that fire in your belly with some stellar bevvos, too. A food event isn’t complete without the beers from Young Henrys and The Grifter Brewing Co, plus appearances from cheeky sommelier Giorgio de Maria and his Fun Wines, Poor Toms Gin, Jacoby’s Tiki Bar…you get the drift. There’s a lot going on, and it’s getting us more than a little hot under the collar just thinking about it.
Burning Love is the winter version of the epic summer Night Markets, curated by chef Kylie Kwong (who’ll also be cooking up a storm with the Billy Kwong crew, BTW). That Night Market sold out, so you’ll be wise to snap up some tickets ($10) before they…go out in flames. Sorry, we’re done, we promise.
