Australia Day marks the day that the First Fleet arrived on these shores back in 1788. It’s a favorite day for awards ceremonies and citizenship presentations. It’s also when people get together and have fun. Here are our top 5 ideas for things to do on 26th January.

January 26th is Australia Day, a national public holiday that celebrates the nation’s diversity and achievements. There are tons of ways to celebrate. Show your national pride by whipping up your favorite Australian foods, singing along to patriotic songs with your mates, making Australia-themed crafts, and watching the fireworks. So here are some ideas to celebrate:

1) Fire up the barbie:

The BBQ: a cliched tradition, but a culture all the same. Get a plate stacked with real Australian grub. Majority of Aussies will be enjoying a snag to ring in the holiday. Keep it simple and top it off with some tomato sauce and caramelized onions. If you’re going for the burger, then there are a few ingredients to slip in to prove you’re patriotic: beetroot and pineapple.

2) Beach time:

If you’re near one, do the real blue Aussie thing and hit the sand and surf. Just be careful about the surf condition. You can also enjoy playing Volleyball or Cricket at the beach.

3)Be the Aussie-est?

Wearing anything with the Australian flag on it is a widespread tradition. People have temporary tattoos, novelty sunglasses, nail shields, t-shirts, boardies, thongs, and bikinis. Fashion experts are saying that 2018 is the year of the bucket hat.

4) Enjoy Aussie movie, Tim Tam and Pavlova

If you can’t handle the sunlight and don’t want to go to parks or the markets, staying indoors is the excellent option. Whip out all of the classics and get straight into a movie extravaganza with all of the gems: The Castle, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and Muriel’s Wedding. Make sweet & salty popcorn your snack of choice. Tim-Tam Slam is the country’s favorite biscuit related past-time. To have a Tim-Tam Slam, you need a Tim Tam and a hot drink (coffee, or a Milo if you want the full True Blue experience).A Pavlova is just a big meringue topped with cream and fresh fruit. Strawberries make a sweet topping.

Featuring local bands, food and beverages, Citizenship ceremonies and Australia Day awards, Many city councils will hold a public fireworks display for all to enjoy. Watch the sky burst with life and color, ending your Australia Day with an experience that leaves you with a little belief in magic and wonder.
